Orienteering uses a special map showing ‘control points’, and the aim is to navigate to each marker and note the letter/number or use the punch to record your visit.  Chopwell Wood has a permanent course for groups or beginners – the Schools/Compact Course has 20 controls all within 600 metres of the main car park.

The map for the Schools/Compact Course has been updated and reprinted in 2015, copies are available from the Friends  – see details on the “Membership Info” page.

Orienteering clubs often set up temporary courses throughout the north east, and joining a club is a good way to learn much more about this sport.  The local club is Northern Navigators, and their contact details are on the “Links” page.
