Local schools have come to Chopwell Wood for educational purposes for many years. School visits are enhanced by the use of the Forest Classroom, associated Nature Trail and Pond. More details are on the ‘Educational Resources’ page.
Use of the Classroom for self-led visits can be booked via the Forestry Commission – telephone 03000 674200. For use of the Classroom with an Education Leader provided see the ‘Educational Visits’ page – most of these led visits will be with Groundwork North East.
If you are organising a self-led educational visit to Chopwell Wood, then contact the Forestry Commission at firstname.lastname@example.org for further advice.
Many of the event listed on the ‘What’s On’ page are educational in nature, and there is also an orienteering course which is particularly suitable for school use. All of the marker points are within 600 metres of the Main Car Park. Maps for this course are available from the Friends – Schools/Compact Course Map costs £1 plus p&p – order form can be found on the ‘Membership Info’ page.
Schools and groups visiting Chopwell Wood should inform the Forestry Commission of any intended visit, for safety reasons, so that information about any possible conflicts with other events, felling operations, or other work can be given. Failure to inform the Forestry Commission about a group visit could invalidate your insurance cover. It is also recommended that group leaders make an initial visit to carry out a Risk Assessment.
